Innovation Will Remain Critical to America’s Future One of the key’s to America’s prosperity is that we invent. It is important that this innovation continues to take place in the United States. For many years American companies have shifted jobs overseas to reduce the cost of production, now companies have begun to shift R&D to other countries seeking to lower the cost of this activity. However, many of these countries do not have the protections for intellectual property that exist in the United States. It is critical that companies that innovate in the United States can still protect their intellectual property through patents and trademarks. Some would seek to limit the amount of damages that a court could award, so it would be possible for companies with deep pockets simply to buy their way out of patent infringement.
